There are now only 10 days between now and the closing date of Lawrence Chikwa’s solo exhibition at the gallery. The show closes on Saturday 4th January 2025 and we will be open everyday till then except Christmas & New Years, and Sundays & Mondays. Catch it before we say goodbye to one of our biggest shows of 2024 💫

Yesterday we joined the Lusaka Photo Walk hosted by Namukolo of Eness Photography as part of a Photography Week organised by Zimbabwe based platform for emerging African artists called Unpublished in Africa.

We started from Lusaka National Museum and walked towards Kamwala to get a sense of the historic significance of this neighbourhood. It was once a second-class trading area for Indians, and remains to be home to predominantly Indian residents and businesses. Our guide for the various points of interest was Indian-Zambian Everyday Lusaka founder @sanaginwalla. Kamwala is also one of the few places in Lusaka where a mosque, church and temple can be found within a mile radius from one another.

Most stores were closed on Sunday but we did meet various vendors along the way, observing Kamwala in an otherwise rare silence and emptiness. Shooting street photography does not come without its challenges but the best thing to have is a smile with every interaction - no matter how daunting!

The walk ended at the museum where we chanced upon electric rehearsals for the upcoming Nc’wala ceremony of the Ngoni people. Rehearsals will be taking place everyday Sunday for the new few weeks at the museum from 16-17hrs!

Coming up this Saturday: an artist talk with Lawrence Chikwa whose solo exhibition is currently running at the gallery.

The event is free and starts at 12hrs on the 7th of December. Hope to see you there!

We are pleased to host an artist talk for Lawrence

We are pleased to host an artist talk for Lawrence Chikwa next Saturday at the gallery. This will be a rare opportunity for visitors to meet and engage with one of Zambia’s most important artists this December.

Working from his studio in Chongwe which is nestled amongst hills and greenery away from Lusaka’s hustle and bustle, Lawrence Chikwa’s practice considers the concepts of how we relate to land, resources, communication and spirituality within our post-independence context. Elements of nature such as seeds, pods, and other found materials from his everyday life form the distinct materiality in his practice.

In “Lost Garden & Eaten Apples”, Lawrence Chikwa confronts the idea of Africa as a disrupted eden, where its people question whether they must continue tasting the bitterness of past struggles or seek new means to cultivate a different future.

This exhibition has so far sparked many conversations around Christianity, technology and Zambia’s independence. This artist talk will be a chance to discourse with Lawrence Chikwa himself about the various thought-provoking works on display.

A week ago we opened “Lost Garden & Eaten Apples” a Solo Exhibition by Lawrence Chikwa curated by @sanaginwalla.

It’s been a wonderful process putting this show together and welcoming new and old friends into the space.

The show runs till the 7th of December 2024. Be sure to come through if you haven’t already and bring a friend.

Moments from the opening of Lawrence Chikwa’s solo “Lost Garden & Eaten Apples” curated by @sanaginwalla, which is still open till Saturday 4th January 2025.   Special thank you to @__sahildesai__ and @_mufrika for the live acoustic music that carried us through the garden.   In this long-awaited-for exhibition as Zambia reaches 60 years of independence, Lawrence Chikwa analyses Zambia’s post-colonial realities. Chibuye Changwe of @art_gallivant in the exhibition text expresses that, “although independence has revealed diverse views among different generations and their descendants, it is colonial pessimism that diminished confidence in both the past and future-making. ‘Lost Garden & Eaten Apples’ is a commentary on the burden of this history, unveiling what lies behind the scenes of a linear narrative about progress and rights.”

Lawrence Chikwa will be at the gallery tomorrow on Thursday 14th November. Pop by to meet him and engage with his thought-provoking series of works.  Our opening hours:  Tues-Fri 9-17hrs

“As a conceptual artist, Lawrence Chikwa’s work carries profound depth and complexity, weaving a historical timeline through his commentary on Zambia’s colonial history and current societal conditions. He examines the consequences of history and the changing ways we perceive nature, doctrines, religion, and future perspectives within a contemporary capitalist framework.”

In this highly anticipated exhibition of new and past works, ‘Lost Garden & Eaten Apples’ “uses the image of a mythical garden to symbolise Africa as a once-lost paradise, specifically evoking the imagery of Zambia’s journey and the shifts between modernity and nature, traditional practices, and symbols of power.”

Thank you all who came to our “Letters to Strangers” event last Saturday ✍️ It was a wonderful day to engage with Daudi who launched his series called “The Commuter” which was printed on a new edition of Everyday Lusaka postcards and folded cards.

All products are available at the gallery and @lsk.collective. Postcards are K50 and folded cards are K100 📮

The current exhibition “A Flock of Voids” at the Everyday Lusaka Gallery closes this Saturday! The exhibition includes a series of five reworked sculptures by Rabson Phiri which will be travelling to the Open Exhibition @ Sunningdale House this weekend!
 “Arising into leviathan rejection of gravity, Rabson Phiri’s sculptures in wood are syncretic structures that reveal in their twirl shapes of fauna and flora. They have teeth in spaces that resemble a string instrument, and they stand up like a disfigured human body. Their limbs are markers of resistance – a resistance of a life lived beyond the odds. Beginning at a cycle-repair shop, where fixing cycles denuded in journeys in the dust, a place where you make do with parts, re-fashion, re-buff, weld, paint and reuse. Friday Tembo the Zambian sculptor came to repair his cycle to his shop, and they got talking – Rabson visited his studio and claimed he could work on sculpture like him. Here his apprenticeship began under a master who would refashion found material – stone, wood and metal. The sculptor and student were determined to produce an oeuvre that could contain Africa - its beauty, its diverse visuality, music and spirituality. Using a grinder and carving tool, Rabson works wood into a realm of African fantasmic surrealism.”

The last day to see “A Flock of Voids” exhibit

The last day to see “A Flock of Voids” exhibition at Everyday Lusaka Gallery by Rabson Phiri and David Makala is on Saturday 26th October! Here we show snippets from Makala’s ongoing “Design Stories” series.  
From the reader essay written by Sumesh Manoj Sharma: 
“In ‘A Flock of Voids’ David prints images on discarded aluminium plates that had previously been used in offset printing of newspapers, textbooks, bibles, psalms, magazines, official documents and technical readers. His figures of humans and animals printed on top of the existing text obscures what these plates had been originally used for printing. Printing on top of a printing plate is akin to the act of layering in painting. As a keen observer of history and materiality, Makala paints a ‘Pan-African’ consciousness where he connects Bob Marley’s poetry of a return to Africa to the political assertions of decolonisation through the quotes of Thomas Sankara. He asks about the image any text holds – how true is that text and how does it become the initiator of our identities?   We see elements of erasure and words that go faint that are covered by the images he produces on them and arrests our attention as the viewer forcing us to decipher if the written word has a connection to the image. Here he asks the pertinent question: Who decides on the written word produced here and how does the authorship of those words construct our lives? As if his images on these plates are the visual markers - images of the lives of people who were constructed by that newspaper article, magazine cutting and the inspiring psalm. Are these divine acts of destiny or well-constructed manipulations of man in power?”  The full essay titled “Why Do Africans Dance” – a question posed by Makala – is published in the exhibition reader, available for purchase or viewing at the gallery!
